Learn the mechanics and anatomy of twisting postures, tips to deepen your twists and how to increase comfort and safety while twisting. Class will include discussion on improving both standing and seated twists. The final hour of class will be an asana practice to apply techniques taught in class. Practice will begin with a warm up followed by an exploration of each category of twisting postures, forward bends and savasana. Handouts outlining class content and will be provided, note taking is encouraged. All levels welcome.

 

Workshop Content

 

  • Identifying categories of twisting postures

  • Benefits, mechanics and modifications of twists

  • Anatomy of the core and back muscles used in twists and how to engage the correct muscles in each category 

  • Learn the role subtle arm and leg rotations play in spinal rotation 

  • Breathing mechanics in twists for increased comfort, safety and effectiveness

  • Causes of limitations you may experience and how to work with them 

  • Noticing mis-alignments during practice and tips for adjusting your own twists or assisting your students in theirs.

Magnificent Twists

Sunday May 5

10:30 AM -2:00 PM

If you cringe at the thought of back bends and avoid them at all costs, or maybe feel like you are not progressing in your back bends, you are not alone. In this workshop your will learn key concepts and techniques to help you understand and enjoy the benefits of back bending postures. Class will include a combination of lecture content, discussion and practice. The final hour of class will be an asana practice to apply to principles taught in the lecture. Practice will include a warm up, progressive back bending sequence followed by twists and forward bends to release tension in the back before savasana. Handouts will be provided, note taking is encouraged. All levels welcome.

Workshop Content

  • The four functions of back bending postures

  • The role of the 'iliopsoas' (hip flexors), pelvic tilt and core muscles in backbends

  • Breathing mechanics and bandhas to increase comfort and control

  • Overcoming fear 

  • Understanding the spine in backbends

  • Categorizing different types of back bends and identifying which one may be better for your body 

  • How to modify back bends in a Yoga class to achieve maximum safety and effectiveness
